WASHINGTON, D.C.—Rep. Greg Stanton today issued the following statement after a classified intelligence briefing on U.S.-Iran tensions.
“Earlier today, I received a classified intelligence briefing from top Administration officials.
It remains painfully clear that the Administration lacks a coherent Middle East and West Asia policy, and there are still many unanswered questions.
I am grateful that no Americans were harmed during last night’s missile attack in Iraq. But it is naive to conclude that Iran is “standing down.” In the last week, the Iranian regime announced it will no longer abide by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and has restarted its nuclear weapons program. That poses serious near- and long-term risks to our national security and the security of our allies.
We are at a pivotal point in the U.S.-Iran relationship and the Administration must present the American people with clear, coherent strategies to bring Iran to the negotiating table to prevent future violence and stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. The safety of future generations hangs in the balance.”
