Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, abortion laws and access to care have varied substantially from state to state. Arizona has taken some steps to improve abortion rights and access during that time, including as recently as May 2024, when the state legislature passed and the governor signed into law the repeal of a resurrected near-total abortion ban from 1864.

The state legislature has also taken steps to restrict abortion rights and access, including with the 15-week ban that went into effect in 2022 immediately following the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. In Arizona, while there are restrictions in place that undermine access to care, abortion is an available reproductive health option up to 15 weeks of pregnancy, and contraception is safe and legal. Arizonans will also have a chance to vote on abortion rights at the ballot box this November.

I believe all Arizonans deserve the freedom to make their own medical decisions—including about abortion.

I’m a proud cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation to guarantee access to abortion, everywhere across the country and restore the right to comprehensive reproductive health care for millions of Americans.

I’m also a cosponsor of the Access to Family Building Act to establish a nationwide right to in-vitro fertilization and other assisted reproductive technology, as well as lower the costs of IVF treatment for the millions of families who need it to have their children; the Right to Contraception Act to enshrine the right to contraception into federal law; and the STOP Comstock Act which would prevent extremists from using this outdated law to ban the mailing of medicines used for lawful abortion.
