President Joe Biden recently signed the FAA Reauthorization bill into law, which includes a provision that lifts a longstanding federal deed restriction. Therefore, Buckeye has been granted access to 940 acres of state trust land along Verrado Way, between Yuma Road and Van Buren Street.

“It will give (the city) the right of way to do road improvement, which is highly needed in that area,” said Dan Bronis, Buckeye public information officer. “It will also allow us to get some economic development into that area as well that will bring more growth and prosperity here too.”

The reauthorization was the result of years of concerted effort and collaboration between Buckeye city officials, federal representatives — including Sens. Krysten Sinema and Mark Kelly — and Reps. Paul Gosar and Greg Stanton.

“We do want to thank our congressional delegation a lot for their support during this because without their help with it, I don’t think this would have   gotten very far,” Bronis said.

The federal deed restricted the land’s use because its a former satellite military airfield. With the removal of that federal deed restriction the city of Buckeye expects to make significant road improvements to Verrado Way, Yuma Road and Van Buren Street.

“It will allow us to widen the road allowing for less congestion in that area,” Bronis said.

“It is highly needed especially with the charter school in that area and with the growth expected in that area of the city.”

It gives the city the chance to develop the area, which will attract new businesses and investments because it’s near  I-10 and Abrazo and Costco.

The current plan is a development called The Landing, which will be a “premier destination” for the West Valley. Bronis said The Landing is still in its early study phases but it’s expected to have recreation opportunities, entertainment, businesses, shopping and living quarters.

“This provision in the FAA reauthorization is a gamechanger for Buckeye,” Mayor Eric Orsborn said.

“It helps us address our resident’s concerns on traffic congestion and unlocks tremendous potential for economic growth and job creation in our community.

“We are immensely grateful to our congressional delegation for their unwavering support and commitment to our city’s prosperity.”
