Taxpayer Data Protection Act ensures only public servants can access sensitive personal information

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Rep. Greg Stanton joined House Democrats to introduce the Taxpayer Data Protection Act. This legislation is a direct response to Elon Musk’s shameful invasion of Americans’ privacy. It will stop people with conflicts of interest or without a security clearance from accessing the highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system–which is responsible for Social Security and Medicare benefits.

“My office has received hundreds of calls from Arizonans outraged that Elon Musk–unelected and unaccountable–has forced his way into government facilities and gained unrestricted access to Americans' private and personal information. The Treasury employs nonpartisan civil servants specifically trained to safeguard the sensitive personal information of millions of Americans, like Social Security numbers, bank information and tax returns. Unsecured access to this information is a massive national security risk,” Stanton said.

If passed, the Taxpayer Data Protection Act will curb corruption and protect privacy by ensuring that only trusted public servants without conflicts of interest and with appropriate security clearances can access the Treasury Department’s most sensitive systems.
