WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Rep. Greg Stanton released the following statement following President Donald Trump’s announcement of sweeping new tariffs:

“Higher tariffs mean higher prices for Arizona families and businesses,” Stanton said. “My colleagues on the other side of the aisle need to understand: this chaos ends when Congress takes back its Constitutional authority over international commerce.”

According to the Arizona Commerce Authority, the state imported $42.2 billion worth of goods in 2024—a 19.4% increase ($6.9 billion) from 2023. Arizona’s top import countries included Mexico ($11.6 billion in 2024), Taiwan ($3.6 billion), Canada ($2.7 billion) and Japan ($2.4 billion). In addition to the previously announced 25% tariffs on both Mexico and Canada, Trump is imposing an additional 32% tariffs on Taiwan and 24% tariffs on Japan.

Stanton has backed the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act to stop the President of the United States from imposing tariffs under the guise of a national emergency without Congressional approval, and the Congressional Trade Authority Act to require the president to submit to Congress any proposal to adjust tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.

Last month, Stanton led a resolution to terminate Trump’s unlawful use of “emergency” authorities under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which he has used to justify tariffs based on a fabricated national emergency. The resolution was ‘privileged,’ which means that under House rules it must be brought to the floor for a vote within 15 days. But Republican leadership slipped language into a procedural vote to block consideration.

All three bills would restore authority over trade to Congress, as the framers of the Constitution intended.
