WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, U.S. Representative Greg Stanton (D-Ariz.) slammed House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican lawmakers on the House floor for blocking a vote on his legislation ending Trump’s tariff authority.
The effort led by Speaker Johnson would block the House from voting until after July 31 on legislation to end the president’s emergency tariff powers under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This marks the third time Republicans have blocked action; earlier last year, Speaker Johnson quietly pushed through provisions that blocked action until after Jan. 31.

Stanton has been leading the effort in Congress to end Trump’s unchecked use of tariffs and restore Congressional authority. He led a resolution to terminate Trump’s unlawful use of “emergency” authorities under IEEPA to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Stanton has also backed the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act to stop the President of the United States from imposing tariffs under the guise of a national emergency without Congressional approval.
Speaking on the House floor, Stanton said, “Too many Republicans would rather surrender their congressional authority than stand up to Trump. No, they’d rather cross their fingers and hope the Supreme Court settles this.”
Last November, the Supreme Court held oral arguments on the legality of President Trump's tariffs and whether the President has the power to impose tariff policy under IEEPA. A ruling is expected in the coming months.
Analysis from the nonpartisan Tax Foundation released today shows that Americans continue to bear the cost of Trump’s tariffs, costing an average of $1,000 for families in the last year alone.
