WASHINGTON, D.C.—Ahead of the Mexican general elections on June 2, Rep. Greg Stanton questioned Secretary of State Antony Blinken about critical issues impacting the U.S.-Mexico relationship at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing—including increased migration, fentanyl trafficking, advanced manufacturing companies ‘nearshoring’ parts of their supply chains to Latin America, and shared water scarcity issues.
“America and Mexico’s fates are intertwined—not just as geographic neighbors, but as strategic partners in tackling increased global migration, illicit fentanyl trafficking, and water scarcity on both sides of the border,” Stanton said. “There are incredible opportunities before us. Mexico recently overtook China to become America’s largest trading partner. As President Biden and Congressional leaders work to bring advanced manufacturing back to the U.S., ‘nearshoring’ supply chain components in Mexico and Latin America becomes all the more critical, particularly for national security.”
