PHOENIX—Rep. Greg Stanton released the following statement following the Supreme Court in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, which challenges Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act (“CADA”) which prohibits businesses that are open to the public from discriminating on the basis of numerous characteristics, including sexual orientation:
“A decade ago, as mayor, I led the City of Phoenix in passing a non-discrimination ordinance. The first of its kind in the state, it banned discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, employment and public accommodations. It sent a strong message about our values: everyone is welcome in Phoenix. As it turns out, both people and businesses have thrived, and 10 cities and towns across the state have followed suit.
Today’s disappointing decision by the Supreme Court threatens the progress we’ve made in Arizona.
Congress cannot sit by and allow this Court to roll back hard-won rights. We must pass the Equality Act and the Do No Harm Act to ensure all Americans are afforded equal protections under the law.”
