WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, the House passed H.J.Res. 72, a resolution U.S. Representative Greg Stanton (D-Ariz.) led to terminate Trump’s national emergency used to impose tariffs on Canada. Six Republicans crossed the aisle to vote with Democrats, a bipartisan rebuke of the President’s chaotic trade war.

Stanton will move next to pass H.J.Res. 73, a resolution terminating Trump’s tariffs on Mexico, Arizona and America’s largest trading partner.

Stanton spoke on the House floor ahead of the vote on H. J. Res. 72, saying, “Congress has the power of the purse, not the President. It’s time we take our power back from an executive that is out of control.”

The passage of the resolution comes a day after three Republicans joined every Democrat to defeat a procedural move by Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans that would’ve blocked consideration of resolutions to end the president’s emergency tariff powers under IEEPA until July 31. They had used a similar procedural trick to block consideration until this month.

Stanton has been highly critical of Trump’s sweeping tariffs, and has backed the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act, which would stop the president from imposing tariffs under the guise of a national emergency without congressional approval. He also backed the Congressional Trade Authority Act, legislation that would require the president to submit to Congress any proposal to adjust tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. That authority has been used to impose or threaten tariffs on foreign cars and auto parts, aluminum, lumber, steel, and copper imports, driving aluminum prices to record highs and raising housing costs.
