Today, Rep. Greg Stanton issued the following statement following Governor Katie Hobbs’ announcement she would deploy the Arizona National Guard to the Southern Border to supplement U.S. Customs and Border Protection staff as they respond to record levels of migrant crossings.
“The situation along the Arizona border has reached a crisis point, and Governor Hobbs is making the right call in sending the Arizona National Guard to provide backup to our over-stretched Border Patrol,” Stanton said.
“Arizonans can’t keep making up for the federal government’s failures,” Stanton continued. “It’s past time for my colleagues here in Congress to put politics aside, and work across the aisle to get federal law enforcement the resources they need to do their jobs.”
The Administration has requested $13.6 billion emergency border security funding to ensure the Department of Homeland Security has the additional resources and personnel to accomplish their mission of maintaining border security while assisting refugees and processing migrants, including funds to hire an additional 1,300 border patrol agents. In October, Stanton led 34 of his colleagues in a letter to Congressional leadership calling on the Senate and the House to quickly bring a bipartisan border security package reflecting the Administration’s supplemental request to the floor.
