WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Greg Stanton (D-Ariz.) sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons demanding a full and transparent accounting of the death of Emmanuel Damas, a Haitian national detained at the Florence Service Processing Center in Arizona.

“I spoke to Emmanuel Damas’s brother this morning to offer my sincere condolences. His family deserves answers and accountability, and I will not stop pushing until ICE provides it,” Stanton said.

Stanton’s letter requests detailed information about Damas's death, additional questions regarding the facility's medical capacity and protocols including:

  • A complete medical examiner’s report concerning Mr. Damas's cause and manner of death
  • A comprehensive accounting of all medical care offered to, provided to, or withheld from Mr. Damas during his detention at Florence, including dates, names of medical personnel, documented complaints, and requests for referral.
  • ICE’s notification protocols and full account of when Mr. Damas's family was notified of his condition and subsequent hospitalization.
  • Whether ICE has initiated an internal review or critical incident investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Damas's death.
