U.S. Congressman Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., Dean of Arizona's Democratic Delegation, condemned House Speaker Mike Johnson for breaking his own precedent and refusing to administer the oath of office to Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva during the Pro Forma session of Congress today.
“By blocking her from taking the oath of office, you are depriving more than 800,000 Arizonans of their rightful voice in Congress. That is a direct violation of both the Constitution’s guarantee of representation and the House’s duty to respect the will of the voters,” wrote Congressman Stanton.
He continued, “The double standard is clear. Under your leadership, Republican special election winners, such as Republicans Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine, were both sworn in earlier this year within twenty-four hours of their elections. You personally administered these oaths during Pro Forma sessions. Yet now, without explanation, you are denying the same treatment to Representative-elect Grijalva.”
