WASHINGTON, D.C.—Representative Greg Stanton and top Democrats introduced a privileged resolution to terminate President Trump’s abuse of “emergency” authorities to impose sweeping tariffs on U.S. imports.
The Resolution would end Trump’s declared national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), an authority he is using to levy a blanket 10% tariff on all imports, along with additional massive tariffs on dozens of key U.S. trading partners. Under the National Emergencies Act, a privileged resolution to terminate the emergency must be acted upon within 15 calendar days, otherwise, it must be brought for a vote to the House floor.
“Trump’s tariffs are one of the most self-defeating policies I’ve ever seen—sabotaging our international allies while raising prices for Arizona families and businesses,” said Stanton. “The clear abuse of power has created economic chaos on a global scale. Congress needs to take back its authority over international trade, and that’s exactly what this resolution does.”
Stanton led a similar resolution last month to terminate Trump’s unlawful use of “emergency” authorities to levy tariffs on Canada and Mexico—but House Republican leadership slipped language into a procedural vote to block consideration
He’s also backed the Prevent Tariff Abuse Act to stop the President of the United States from imposing tariffs under the guise of a national emergency without Congressional approval, and the Congressional Trade Authority Act to require the president to submit to Congress any proposal to adjust tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
